Natalie Portman

Darren Aronofsky's Black Swan (2010) was everything I thought it would be and so much more. A vertiginous cross between the horror of Rosemary’s Baby (1968), and the paranoia and visual style of Inland Empire (2006), with a blood-red drip of All About Eve (1950). Holding it all together, whilst dually falling apart was Natalie Portman as ambitious protagonist Nina Sayers. For a whole year Portman trained for five hours a day doing ballet and swimming in preparation for the role and her hard work paid off with one of the most physically (and no doubt mentally) demanding performances of her career. If she doesn’t win every award available, I vow to stab myself in the face repeatedly with a nail file.

3. Garden State (2004)

5. Cold Mountain (2003)
